They say that the year only begins after Carnival, but if it’s up to the Cariocas, there are parties all year round. So much so that, this month alone, we’ve already had Carnival and the anniversary of the Marvelous City! But that’s not all! Check out the things to do in Rio de Janeiro in March!
Note: this guide is updated throughout the month, so keep an eye out so you don’t miss any tips!

But there’s so much more: our complete guide here!
Praça XV Antiques Fair
If you love a rarity, take advantage of a Saturday in March to visit the Praça XV Antiques Fair.
Every week, early in the morning the exhibitors set up shop near the Paço Imperial, with rare vinyl records, decorative objects and pieces of clothing that you’ll only find there.
A curiosity: the fair has been held in the same place since 1970!
Underdeveloped Art
As part of our tips for things to do in Rio de Janeiro in March, it’s also worth popping into the CCBB to see the new exhibition “Arte Subdesenvolvida”(Under developed Art).
With works by important Brazilian artists such as Cândido Portinari, Hélio Oiticica and Carolina Maria de Jesus, the show features various pieces from the 1930s and 1980s by those who used art to react to the concept of underdevelopment that was propagated at the time.

They Drive
March is also women’s month and, at the Estação NET Cinema Circuit, the ‘Elas Dirigem’ (They Drive) exhibition will be held in their honor.
The event brings together some of the greatest cinematic masterpieces directed by women over almost 130 years of cinema history. Among them, Kinuyo Tanaka (“Forever a Woman”) and Ida Lupino (“The Bigamist”), who were stars of the Golden Age in Japan and the United States.
In Brazil, names like Lucia Murat (“Que Bom Te Ver Viva”), Laís Bodanszky (“Bicho de Sete Cabeças”) and Raquel Gerber (“Ôrí”) help us find parallels in Latin America for narratives about and/or by women.

Titânia
To celebrate women’s month, there’s also the premiere of the circus show ‘Titânia’, at various SESC cultural venues in Rio de Janeiro.
The show is loosely inspired by the strong women who revolutionized the fragile way women were seen in the Victorian era, in the mid-19th century.
Thus, circus actress Erika Mesquita narrates the story of Titânia, the cyborg woman, from birth to adulthood.
This story, made up of scenes that could be pure fiction or clippings from real life, also tells Erika’s own story between the lines, of how she became a strong woman in the circus.

The Dalal Achcar Ballet Company is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the show ‘Floresta Amazônica‘ with four performances this month at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro.
Inspired by the symphony of the same name by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, the performance features dancers and soloists who bring the essence of Brazilianness to the stage.
Thus, the performance not only reinforces the feeling of national belonging, but also pays reverence to Villa-Lobos’ musical legacy.
