What is Flup?
The Literary Festival of the Peripheries, better known as Flup, is one of the city’s most important literary festivals. This is because its mission is to bring literature to the peripheral territories of Rio de Janeiro, to democratize access to books, ideas and experiences.
Thus, in its 12 years in Rio de Janeiro, Flup has already been to Morro dos Prazeres, Vigário Geral, Mangueira, Babilônia, Vidigal, Cidade de Deus, Maré, Biblioteca Parque, Museu de Arte do Rio and Providência, promoting meetings between great literary personalities, both national and international.
Flup ‘s other distinguishing feature is its educational process. As a result, more than 30 books have already been published by authors from the peripheries. Among them, Geovani Martins, a young resident of Rocinha whose debut book has been translated into more than 10 countries!
Conceição Evaristo is the honored author of the 2025 edition
In this 15th edition, Flup’s theme will be “Ideas for Reenchanting the World: Writings, Dreams and Beats”. This is a celebration of the political, artistic, musical and poetic influence of the Caribbean on the African diaspora, with an emphasis on soundsystems culture.
And speaking of writing, this year’s honored author is Conceição Evaristo, one of the most important in the country. It was she who introduced the concept of “Escrevivências”, which transformed the way we narrate and understand the experiences of black women and peripheral communities.
Flup 2025 shakes up Madureira with concerts, conversation circles and more!
After passing through various parts of Rio over the years, Flup arrives in Madureira this Wednesday with a varied program that is completely free of charge.
Talks, performances, films, a spoken word poetry championship and free concerts are among the attractions at the festival, which is spread across the Madureira Viaduct, CUFA and Zê Ene.
