Clarice Lispector’s enigmatic and famous short story served as the inspiration for “The Egg and the Chicken, ” a monologue that premieres this Friday at the Ziembinski Theater.

The production went through several iterations before reaching its current form
The original play is directed and produced by Ana Hartmann, who, together with Joana Medeiros, shares the stage direction for the famous text published in 1964 in the collection “A Legião Estrangeira.”
For those unfamiliar with Clarice’s short story , the plot stems from a woman’s philosophical observation of an egg on the kitchen table. However, the play has undergone several changes since its first staging until it reached its current format.
In the final version arriving in Rio this month, the monologue transforms the stream of consciousness of the character Clarice and brings to life the different states of her consciousness. Furthermore, it presents the text in its entirety, in a fresh and captivating way .
Tijuca was one of the first neighborhoods to welcome the writer
The play “The Egg and the Chicken” is coming to Rio de Janeiro’s stages for a short run in Tijuca. And this neighborhood in the North Zone has a special connection to Clarice Lispector.
That’s because it was one of the first places in Rio to welcome the Ukrainian writer. Clarice also lived in other neighborhoods of the capital, including Leme, where there is a statue in her honor.
The stage production by Teatro Oficina Uzyna Uzona premieres this Friday at Teatro Ziembinski and runs through September 27. Performances take place Friday through Sunday, with tickets starting at R$ 35.
