After announcing an increase in Rio de Janeirosubway fares starting in April 2026, the state government reversed its decision and decided to suspend the new fare of R$ 8.20.
However, the current price of R$ 7.90 remains the most expensive in the country, surpassing São Paulo and other Brazilian capitals. In addition, the adjustment will be applied to other municipal transportation options, such as buses and BRTs. Learn more!
Criticism and public outcry were decisive factors in the fare change

Although it had not yet been published in the Official Gazette, the subway fare increase had already been approved by the State Transportation Regulatory Agency.
According to the concessionaire MetrôRio, this adjustment is provided for in the concession contract, based on the twelve-month variation of the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA).
However, the announcement of the new price of R$ 8.20 for a subway ticket caused an uproar and much criticism from those who use public transportation daily.
As a result, the Rio de Janeiro State Government made a new announcement on the evening of Wednesday, February 25. Governor Cláudio Castro stated that he will not adjust the subway fare this year and that it will remain at R$ 7.90.
In addition, users of the Intermunicipal Single Ticket (BUI) program who are entitled to the Social Fare will continue to pay R$5, as the discount, which expires on April 11, will be renewed.
Municipal transportation will see an increase in fares

Although the subway will continue with the current fare, the same cannot be said for other forms of transportation in Rio. This is because, in 2025, the fare for buses, light rail vehicles, BRTs, “cabritinhos” (small buses), and vans was R$4.70.
However, since January, municipal transportation has undergone an adjustment and, since then, has been costing R$ 5.
