In 2025, we told you here that fares for various modes of transportation in Rio de Janeiro would increase. But Rio residents weren’t expecting them to increase again in 2026! And, if you didn’t know, it’s time to get your wallet ready, because the subway fare increase goes into effect in April!
Rio’s subway already has the most expensive fare in Brazil

If you thought paying R$ 7.90 for a subway ticket was expensive, get ready to add R$ 0.30 to the price starting on April 12.
The subway fare has undergone another adjustment, and the ticket will now cost R$ 8.20. According to the concessionaire MetrôRio, the new price has already been approved by the State Transportation Regulatory Agency and will be published in the Official Gazette shortly.
With the new adjustment, Rio de Janeiro’s subway fare remains the most expensive of all Brazilian capitals. To give you an idea, it is almost R$ 3 higher than other urban centers, such as São Paulo, for example.
Also according to MetrôRio, this 3.8% increase is provided for in the concession contract, based on the twelve-month variation in the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA).
Municipal transportation will also see an increase in fares

And it wasn’t just the subway that had a fare increase. In 2025, the fare for buses and municipal transportation in the city of Rio de Janeiro, including light rail vehicles, BRTs, “cabritinhos”(small buses), and vans, was R$ 4.70.
However, since January, municipal transportation has also undergone an adjustment and, since then, has been costing R$ 5.
