Cariocas (and tourists) can now prepare their pockets to travel around Rio de Janeiro! That’s because the increase in bus, train, VLT and BRT fares has been announced and some means of transportation will already start running at the new prices from January. Cabs have also had their fares increased and are already using the new fare. Find out more!
Rio municipal bus fare rises to R$4.70
As of January 5, 2025, Rio de Janeiro’s municipal buses will have a new fare – a more expensive one!
This is because the current fare of R$4.30 has been readjusted and, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette, the new price will be R$4.70. This increase also applies to the BRT, VLT, vans and even the “cabritinhos”, as the city’s complementary transportation system is known.
Rio de Janeiro’s trains will see a fare increase in February
The trains have also been readjusted, but the increase will only come into effect in February.
As a result, cariocas will pay R$0.50 more in fares. In other words, the current price of R$7.10 will change to R$7.60 from February 2.
It is worth noting, however, that users of the Bilhete Único Intermunicipal who are beneficiaries of the social fare will continue to pay the same amount: R$5.
Fare increase also affects cab fares
The increase in fares for public transport also has an impact on private transportation in the city.
This is because, also according to the decree in the Official Gazette , cabs are authorized to adjust their fares and the fare will now be R$6.20.
In practice, this means that from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., from Monday to Saturday, flag 1 will be R$3.65. Flag 2, used at night , from 9pm to 6am, as well as Sundays and public holidays, will be R$4.38. Taxi drivers who disrespect these rules may be penalized.
