International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th. The date, recognized by the UN since 1975, marks the struggle of women for better social, professional and economic conditions.
It is also an occasion to celebrate the progress women have made in society, albeit at a slow pace. In Rio de Janeiro, some activities and initiatives are already planned for the week. Check them out!

Participants will learn about the work of Brazilian researchers Maria Bandeira and Graziela Maciel Barroso, pioneers in scientific research at the institution and in Brazil.
In addition, during the guided tour, you can see the feminine elements represented by sculptures, plants and spaces in the Arboretum. Women and girls are free on the trail and departures are at 10am and 2pm.

Contraponto’ exhibition at Ava Galleria Rio
Ava Galleria Rio is presenting the exhibition ‘Contraponto’, featuring the artists Maria Helena Messeder and Marilene Tapias, with works of opposite expressions, but which talk to each other because of their strong preservational and sustainable appeal.
While Marilene works with flowers and bright colors, Maria Helena works with neutral colors, but gives life to disposable and reusable materials. But both transform the figurative and abstract of their canvases into unforgettable emotions. The opening will be on March 9, starting at 5pm.

Lotus’ in Santa Teresa
The play, being performed at the Ruth de Souza Theater, takes as its starting point the poetics of women. Themes such as love, overcoming, beauty and life are present in the show ‘Lótus’, but within a context of the hypersexualization of female bodies.
Thus, the monologue is an invitation to reflect and reframe the view of feminine and masculine sacredness within affective relationships.
