Adriana Calcanhoto used to say that winter in Leblon is almost freezing. But the singer can now add the other neighborhoods to this verse too! That’s because Cariocas, from the South Zone to the West, are feeling a “different kind of cold” this winter – and with good reason! According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), this is the coldest winter in Rio de Janeiro in almost 20 years!
The survey shows that the highest temperatures have not exceeded 25ºC
The survey was carried out by Climatempo meteorologist Hana Silveira and RJ2 presenter and reporter Priscila Chagas.
Thus, based on Inmet data from the last 23 years, the survey shows that, in 2025, there were 22 days with highs that did not exceed 25°C. What’s more, Rio de Janeiro only had 8 days during the season with highs over 30°C!
It may seem a bit obvious, after all it is winter! But anyone who lives in Rio de Janeiro knows that this is very unusual. That’s because the city is hot in any season – and no wonder there’ s no shortage of memes about winter in the city!
Therefore, with temperatures so low for several days in a row, this study has confirmed that this is the coldest winter in Rio de Janeiro. To give you an idea, the last time this happened was almost 20 years ago, in 2006.
Another interesting fact to note from the study is that, this winter, we also had five days with lows of up to 11 °C! That’s three less than in 2021, a year also considered very cold because of the La Niña phenomenon.
Are you feeling the cold too?
