The city of Rio de Janeiro has more than 160 neighborhoods, but we know that the tourist areas end up getting the most attention. That’s why we launched a challenge to our followers and readers: which is their favorite neighborhood and why? Do you want to know which are the best neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, in the opinion of cariocas? Here are the answers!
Centro
Many people cited the city center as one of the best neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro – and no wonder! The central region stands out for its cultural effervescence, with many leisure options, galleries, museums, theaters, historic buildings and nightlife!
Spending the day walking through the streets of Santa Teresa is a special treat!
Ipanema
Ipanema beach is among the 25 best in the world, beating out places like Greece and Mexico.
The neighborhood also has a very relaxed vibe, which attracts the attention of locals and tourists who love to stroll there. It also has a beautiful view of Morro Dois Irmãos, bike paths and lots of tasty restaurants!
Tijuca
Tijuca has it all – that’s what those who mentioned the neighborhood (several times!) in our post on social media say.
This includes shopping malls, cool bars, waterfalls, green areas and more! In the region, you can also have a lot of fun in the neighboring districts, such as Maracanã, Grajaú and Vila Isabel.
Flamengo
Another neighborhood that readers mentioned a lot was Flamengo. It’s a great option for those who love to enjoy the early morning, as the Aterro is a wide space and perfect for practicing physical activities, walking with the family and enjoying the scenery.
The nightlife is also very busy in the neighborhood!
Copacabana
Of course, the Princesinha do Mar was not going to be left off this list! Copacabana is one of the most famous neighborhoods – here and abroad – because of its famous promenade, but also because of its intense cultural life.
Museums, cinemas, squares, bars and chic restaurants are all part of the neighborhood’s history, as well as its breathtaking views!
Madureira
As the song used to say: “Those who don’t like samba aren’t good people”. And those who do certainly include Madureira in their list of favorite places.
The neighborhood breathes samba with Rio’s two most traditional schools – Portela and Império Serrano. But it’s also famous for its charme dances, parks and commercial buzz. Believe me, Madureira has everything you need!
Urca
For those who like more tranquillity, calm and a beautiful view, Urca is one of our favorite neighborhoods.
Owner of one of the most famous postcards, the Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car, Urca is perfect for those who enjoy a nice evening watching the sunset. What’s more, there’s nothing more Carioca than having a beer and a pastel at Mureta!
Recreio
In the city’s West Zone, Recreio was one of the neighborhoods most mentioned by our readers.
There, the beautiful beaches and parks are great for those who want to spend the day relaxing and enjoying nature. For those who like a more festive atmosphere, you can also enjoy the numerous bars and restaurants in the area.
Botafogo
Also among the readers’ favorite neighborhoods, Botafogo wins over because it has a very young, modern and cool atmosphere. It’s a neighborhood with many street cinemas, bookstores and themed restaurants.
In addition, Enseada de Botafogo has one of the most beautiful views in Rio de Janeiro and bike rides always make for great photos!
With so many neighborhoods and so many beauties in the city, it’s clear that there’s more to our favorites than just this list. So, to check them all out and find out more, click here!
