On July 18 and 19, an edition of “A Day in the Park” will take place in Rio de Janeiro, featuring more than 50 free activities in at least 25 state conservation areas.
The event is part of a national campaign that takes place annually on the weekend that includes July 18. This is because it was on this date that the National System of Conservation Units Act (SNUC) was enacted .
With the theme “Brazil, Champion by Nature, ” the free program includes guided trails, hikes, birdwatching, and workshops for all ages. Learn more here!
One of the highlights is the trail in Tijuca National Park with Aretha Duarte
One of the most anticipated events on Rio de Janeiro’s schedule takes place at Tijuca National Park on July 18.
The Semeia Institute and the Cataratas Group, in partnership with the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the Brazilian Trail Network, are hosting a guided hike and a roundtable discussion with Aretha Duarte.
Aretha is a mountaineer and environmental activist recognized as the first Black Latin American woman to reach the summit of Everest!
The program is divided into two parts. In the morning, residents of the Guararapes and Cerro Corá communities who have registered in advance will hike the Carioca River Trail, guided by Aretha Duarte and members of the Transcarioca Trail.
Next, at the Paineiras-Corcovado Visitor Center, a roundtable discussion will take place, open to residents of the Santa Marta community, participants from the Favela Radical Institute—an NGO founded in Morro do Turano that works with youth from the outskirts through extreme sports—and park visitors who wish to attend the event.
Drawing on her own journey, the mountaineer invites reflection on how contact with nature can open our eyes to new perspectives, strengthen our sense of belonging, and inspire us to overcome challenges.
Where the activities are taking place in the state of Rio
In addition to Tijuca National Park, other conservation areas in Rio de Janeiro are participating in the campaign with their own programs.
Among them, Pedra Branca State Park will offer interpretive and guided trails, including routes to Pedra do Osso and Pedra do Ponto. In addition, the Morros do Pão de Açúcar and Urca Natural Monument will feature an ecological hike to Morro da Urca.
The complete list also includes areas in Petrópolis, Volta Redonda, Niterói, Maricá, Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo, Mangaratiba, and others.

Some activities are open to the public without the need for prior registration. However, others have limited spaces and require advance registration.
