From May 27, CAIXA Cultural in Rio de Janeiro will host the World Press Photo 2025 exhibition. The traveling exhibition features 42 winning projects from the 68th Annual Competition, which reflect today’s most pressing issues. These include politics, gender, migration, armed conflicts and the climate crisis, bringing together stories captured by photographers from 31 countries. And Brazil has some highlights with award-winning professionals and images!
What can I expect from the World Press Photo 2025 exhibition?
The annual World Press Photo Contest has existed since 1955 to recognize and celebrate the best in photojournalism and documentary photography.
However, for this edition, the competition has adopted a regional structure, with six global regions: Africa; North and Central America; South America; West, Central and South Asia; Asia-Pacific and Oceania; and Europe.
Also new is the change from one to three winners in the Individual Photography and Reportage categories in each region of the world. There is also one winner per region in the Long-Term Project category .
Since its inception, the project has showcased images with urgent current issues. This year, the winning projects document everything from protests and uprisings in countries such as Kenya, Myanmar, Haiti, El Salvador and Georgia, to unexpected portraits of political figures in the United States and Germany.
In addition, they reveal moving stories of young people around the world, as well as the impact of climate change in different parts of the world, with records of disasters in Peru, Brazil and the Philippines.
Brazilian photographers and images of Brazil are some of the highlights
Speaking of Brazil, Brazilian photographers and images from the country are some of the highlights of World Press Photo 2025.
This is because there are three Brazilian professionals among the winners: Amanda Perobelli, André Coelho and Anselmo Cunha.
In addition, Brazil played a leading role in the lens of other international professionals. Mexican photographer Musuk Nolte recorded images of the drought in the Amazon, as did Jerome Brouillet, who took the historic photo of Olympic athlete Gabriel Medina during the Paris Olympics.
Exhibition at CAIXA Cultural until July
The exhibition will be shown in various cities around the world and will arrive in Rio de Janeiro on May 27. Here, it will be on display until July 20, so take the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
After the Marvelous City, it will continue on to São Paulo, and then Curitiba and Salvador, which will host the exhibition for the first time.
