The last play written by Nelson Rodrigues, “A Serpente” will take on a new look starting this Wednesday, May 20, on the stage of Cia dos Atores’ headquarters in Lapa.
This time, the production premieres from a female perspective, with the story centered on two sisters who, out of love for one another, make a disastrous decision. More details here!
Play premieres in Rio from a female perspective

Nelson Rodrigues’ play features two sisters who live with their husbands in the same apartment. To prevent a tragedy, one of them makes a decision that changes their destinies forever.
However, in her first work as director and lead actress, Anna Helena Madruga wanted to bring a different take to this classic. Instead of focusing on the traditional female rivalry, the production explores the absolute love between the two women.
In this way, the story reveals the limits of emotional dependence, where sisterly affection is intertwined with an unconditional perversion.
A timeless work, the play “A Serpente” explores current and urgent themes

Written nearly five decades ago, Nelson Rodrigues’s text remains timeless. This is because the text addresses themes such as machismo, femicide, and homophobia in a raw and direct manner .
Consequently, the play exposes social wounds that remain urgent, reaffirming the author’s timeless and unsettling relevance in our current society. Furthermore, the characters involved end up fulfilling dark desires, walking a fine line between life and death.
The play “A Serpente” opens in Rio de Janeiro on May 20 and runs through June 10, with performances on Wednesdays, always at 8 p.m.
