One of the city’s most beautiful and imposing buildings is celebrating its anniversary. And to mark its 117th anniversary, the Rio Municipal Theater has prepared a free program for July 14. Learn more about what’s happening on the anniversary of the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater.
Rio’s Municipal Theater Anniversary Features Free Programming All Day Long
The Municipal Theater’s anniversary program includes a series of activities throughout the day, taking place in various spaces of what is one of the most important architectural and cultural landmarks in downtown Rio— and in the country!
The celebrations begin early, at 9 a.m., on the main staircase, with the traditional performance by the Marine Corps Band. Shortly afterward, the audience can enjoy the young talents of the “Os Pequenos Mozart” project and a special edition of “Ópera do Meio-Dia.” This is a condensed version of Giuseppe Verdi’s classic *Il Trovatore*, performed by soloists from the theater’s choir.
In addition, the celebration continues with performances by the Maria Olenewa State Dance School, the Municipal Theater Ballet, and a concert by the Symphony Orchestra’s String Quartet.
There’s more: if you’re curious about the building’s history, there will be a guided tour at 3 p.m. Shortly after, at 4 p.m., the show “Kabarett ao Revés” brings the talented 60+ dancers of the Municipal Theater Ballet to the stage, proving that maturity is the true star of the show!
Finally, the celebration concludes with the opera *Salvator Rosa*, by Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes. The work returns to the Municipal Theater after 80 years, in a partnership with the Amazonas Theater, bringing together musicians, singers, dancers, and more than 340 costumes.
The program is free, but tickets must be picked up in advance. Tickets for the evening opera are already available online, with a limit of two per CPF. Tickets for the other attractions will be distributed one hour before each performance, subject to capacity.
