The Niterói International Literary Festival (FLIN) returns for its 2026 edition with the theme “Territories of Words” and pays tribute to anthropologist, philosopher, and activist Lélia Gonzalez (1935–1994).
The event takes place August 13–16 and brings together writers, artists, researchers, educators, and readers over four days. We’ll share more details here!
Lélia Gonzalez is this year’s honoree
FLIN 2026 pays tribute to anthropologist, philosopher, and activist Lélia Gonzalez (1935–1994). Lélia is a key figure for understanding the contributions of African and Indigenous traditions to the formation of Brazilian and Latin American identity .
Thus, the choice of Lélia guides the entire structure of the program. Concepts developed by the intellectual, such as “Amefricanity” and “Pretuguese,” run through panels addressing literature, race relations, feminism, memory, education, oral tradition, diversity, and cultural policies.
FLIN 2026 features more than 30 confirmed speakers
The Niterói International Literary Festival reaffirms its role as one of the country’s leading literary events. This is because it fosters a powerful dialogue between literature, music, theater, audiovisual arts, journalism, popular culture, and academic scholarship.
Thus, names such as Emicida, Ana Maria Gonçalves, Eliana Alves Cruz, Jeferson Tenório, Conceição Evaristo, and Luiz Antonio Simas are part of this year’s lineup!
The international voices will be represented by Angolans Ondjaki and Valter Hugo Mãe, whose most recent book was the bestseller at FLIP 2026.
Music will be represented by Teresa Cristina, MC Marechal, Tati Quebra Barraco, and Michael Sullivan. In addition, theater, television, and film will be featured in the program with Paulo Betti, Fabiana Karla, Dadá Coelho, and director Rosane Svartman.
The event will also feature sociologist Jessé Souza, historian Ynaê Lopes dos Santos, journalists Ana Paula Araújo, Carol Raimundi, and Luciana Barreto, researcher Giovanna Heliodoro, among others.
One of the most anticipated moments of this year’s FLIN is the dramatic reading *Fernanda Montenegro Reads Simone de Beauvoir*, a production that has run in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
In it, actress Fernanda Montenegro presents Beauvoir’s (1908–1986) libertarian vision of feminism and her relationship with philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980).
ABL and the National Library on the program
Another new feature of FLIN 2026 is that, for the first time, the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) and the National Library are formally supporting the festival. In addition, they are participating in the program, with 14 ABL members taking part in various panel discussions over the four days.
The event is curated by Vilma Piedade, Elisa Ventura, MC Marechal, Edu Krieger, Carla Portilho, Jordão Pablo de Pão, and Jackson Jacques, FLIN’s general coordinator.
In addition to free admission, the festival offers Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) interpretation and audio description for various activities, and welcomes students from public schools . The full program is available on FLIN’s social media channels.
