In 2025, Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the World Book Capital and there’s no shortage of events to celebrate throughout the year. This weekend alone, there will be two literary festivals in Rio, but there will be more to come over the months. Check out our selection!
FLOPEI
This weekend sees the second edition of the Literary Festival of the Occupants of Praça XV and Intermediations, better known as FLOPEI.
The event brings together exhibitors with different printed publications and also connects with various cultural spaces in the region, such as Livraria Folha Seca, Volta ao Mundo, Galeria Abapirá and others.
In addition, FLOPEI will also have concerts and a children’s program to celebrate Children’s Day.

The Portela Literary Festival will also rock the weekend with a very special program !
In its 5th edition, the event’s theme is “From the quilombos of Oswaldo Cruz to the terreiros of the south” and also pays homage to Dona Neném (1925-2020), a stalwart of the association and widow of composer Manacéa(1921-1995).
There will be two days of FliPortela, with debates, soirees, book launches, workshops, musical performances and more!

FLIN 2025
On the other side of the bridge there’s also a literary festival, right? The Niterói International Literary Festival takes place next weekend for a great meeting between readers, writers and literature lovers!
It’s a super cool event, with more than 60 attractions spread over five different stages. Among them, dramatized readings, meetings with authors and artistic performances.

The Rio de Janeiro Book Festival is a space for launching, publicizing and debating literary, political and cultural production, with an emphasis on so-called ‘resistance literature’.
The event takes place at the end of October, but there’s a warm-up this weekend! Professor Elias Jabbour will be giving a public lecture on October 11 on “Trump, BRICS and the New Global Order”, at Praça Afonso Pena, in Tijuca, starting at 11am.

FLUP

The Literary Festival of the Peripheries arrives in Rio de Janeiro in November, following its mission to bring culture, ideas and experiences to the most peripheral regions of the city.
This year, FLUP will celebrate the revolutionary legacy of the Caribbean and its profound influence on the African diaspora, especially in Brazil. This year’s honored author? Conceição Evaristo, one of the country’s most influential writers!

If you’re visiting Rio’s mountainous region, you can take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the Petrópolis International Literary Festival, which takes place in November.
