From August 17 to 19, the City of Rio, through the Rio World Heritage Institute ( IRPH), together with the Rio de Janeiro Partnerships and Investments Company (CCPAR), is hosting Cultural Heritage Week 2026. The event is free and will bring together experts for discussions on the preservation of memory, urban renewal, and the future of Rio’s heritage.

Cultural Heritage Week begins on August 17, and the program will take place at CCPAR headquarters, located in Rio’s Port District.
The opening, starting at 2:00 p.m., will feature a session celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rio de Janeiro’s Cultural Heritage. Following that, architect Washington Fajardo will deliver a lecture titled “Urban Center Redevelopment.” The first day also marks the opening of the second edition of the “Olhos de Ver 2026” exhibition, with the theme “Stained Glass Windows of Rio de Janeiro.”
On August 18, the program continues with panel discussions on the work and conservation studies of the IRPH, the Open Laboratory of Urban Archaeology (LAAU), and projects to promote cultural heritage, featuring representatives from the BNDES and construction companies.
Another panel discussion will focus on the challenges and new ways of thinking about contemporary cultural heritage. There will be discussions on new urban poetics, historical collections, and gamification.
Technical tours and guided walking tours mark the closing of Cultural Heritage Week
On the final day of Cultural Heritage Week, starting at 10 a.m., the public can participate in guided tours and walking tours through the city’s historic areas. The tours are divided into three themes: the Cultural Corridor, Modernism, and Art Deco.
In the Cultural Corridor, the tour includes stops at Rua da Carioca, the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, and the Franklin Houses. The Modernism tour, meanwhile , includes the Capanema Palace, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), the Monument to the Pracinhas, and Aterro do Flamengo.
But if Art Deco is the focus, the public will visit the Ministry buildings and the Novo Mundo and Standard buildings.
Cultural Heritage Week takes place from August 17 to 19 and is free. But you must register in advance because spots for the panel discussions and tours are limited!
