The Rio de Janeiro Marine Aquarium, or simply AquaRio, is one of the must-see tourist attractions in the city. The space was inaugurated in 2016 and has been delighting all ages with its diverse marine species ever since.

It’s the largest marine aquarium in South America!

With its imposing structure, it’s impossible not to notice AquaRio in Porto Maravilha. But did you know that it’s actually the largest marine aquarium in South America?
That’s because it’s 26,000 m², with a modern, multifunctional facility and 4.5 million liters of water!
AquaRio has a huge ocean tank with panoramic views
Of all the attractions at AquaRio, the biggest is undoubtedly the Ocean Tank – the famous Tancão!
There alone are 3.5 million liters of water and seven meters deep, where visitors have the chance to cross the tank through an underwater tunnel. If you’re lucky, you can see lots of little fish and other species feeding!
And yes, this is where everyone takes their famous Instagrammable photos!
There are more than 10,000 animals and 350 different species

With all this size, AquaRio is home to more than 10,000 animals of 350 different species.
So don’t expect to see only fish roaming around. At AquaRio, you’ll find a diversity of fish, but also sharks, moray eels, seahorses, among others.
It’s a great center for marine life conservation and research
AquaRio is not only a leisure space for locals and tourists, but it is also a marine life conservation and research center.
There, more than 30 studies have been carried out with public and private institutions, with the aim of contributing to the conservation and knowledge of marine ecosystems.
