Starting September 30, the Cavideo Film Club will take over the João Bosco Cultural Arena in Vista Alegre. Conceived by Pedro Monteiro and Cavi Borges, the project features free screenings of Brazilian films, among other cultural activities.
One in ten people watched a Brazilian film in 2025
According to a survey by Ancine, only one in ten people who went to the movies in 2025 watched a Brazilian film.
Actor Pedro Monteiro and filmmaker Cavi Borges are well aware of these figures. As a result, they are creating projects that aim to spark young people’s interest in Brazilian films. In addition to increasing the number of movie theaters, these projects also help cultivate new audiences.
That’s why, starting this month, the duo will launch the Cavideo Film Club in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. There will be 12 free screenings of Brazilian films, followed by discussions and featuring a LIBRAS interpreter.
The initiative builds on the concept developed with the launch of the “Espaço de Cinema Cavideo” at the Museu da Maré (2024) and in Vicente de Carvalho (2026).

“Marte Um,” by Gabriel Martins, is the first film from the Cavideo Film Club
Milena Manfredini curates the club’s film selection . She also curated the Cavideo Film Festival in 2025, which toured the city’s outlying neighborhoods .
The films were chosen from the list of the 50 best Brazilian films of this century. This selection was organized in 2025 by the newspaper O Globo, based on votes from 117 audiovisual professionals in the country, including Cavi Borges.
And we already know which film will kick things off! The film club’s first screening will be “Marte Um, ” directed by Gabriel Martins, on September 30 at 7:00 p.m.
The film follows the Martins, a lower-middle-class Black family, as they navigate life between daily obligations and their hopes and expectations—all while under the strain of a conservative government that has just taken power in the country.
Also on the program are the films “Bacurau, ” by Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonça Filho; “Saneamento Básico, o Filme, ” by Jorge Furtado; “Ela Volta na Quinta, ” by André Novais Oliveira; among others.

Workshops and discussions are part of the program
In addition to film screenings, Cineclube Cavideo will also offer a workshop, led by Cavi Borges, for 20 young people on creating low-budget films. The group will develop a short film .
Plus: There will be post-screening discussions featuring artistic, political, and social reflections on the themes addressed in the films.
For Cavi Borges, the main problem facing Brazilian cinema is the distribution and screening of films.
“[…] Launching a monthly film club dedicated to Brazilian films is an opportunity to showcase these works to a wider audience, especially in areas lacking movie theaters. Film clubs have become an alternative screening circuit that seeks to provide a platform for showing Brazilian films and reaching new audiences.”
And, as Pedro Monteiro concludes, “[…] the project doesn’t just screen films: it creates access, a repertoire, and a sense of belonging.”
