St. George’s Day is a religious festival traditionally celebrated with lots of fireworks, lots of parties and, of course, lots of feijoada! So, if you also want to be part of the celebration, but don’t know where the best festivities will take place in Rio de Janeiro, here are the events for you to plan!
St. George’s Day in Quintino
The neighborhood of Quintino is home to the Igreja Matriz de São Jorge and anyone from Rio de Janeiro knows that the celebrations start there first!
So, in the early hours of April 23rd, with lots of fireworks, thousands of devotees make a procession to the church for the mass that starts at 5am.
Throughout the day, the surrounding streets and bars continue the festivities, with lots of samba, feijoada and beer until the end of the day!

Meeting at Al Farabi
On April 23, Al Farabi will be mixing faith, literature and memory in a special edition of the ‘Rio de Encontros: Escritores Cariocas’ project .
The public is invited to a conversation with writers Felipe Magalhães and Marcelo Moutinho, mediated by Luiz Antonio Simas. The theme: “São Jorge, the suburbs and gambling”.
And, as the tradition of São Jorge dictates, a complete feijoada will be served, with dried meat, loin, oxtail, paio and sausage, accompanied by white rice, cabbage with bacon crisp and oranges!

Labuta Bar’s Extra Hour
St. George’s Day is a holiday in Rio, but there will be an Extra Hour!
After the success of the 2024 edition, Labuta Bar returns with another event this year to celebrate the warrior saint
In addition to Labuta’s classic food and drinks, ‘Hora Extra’ also features samba singer Nego Álvaro, who leads the samba circle alongside some great guests: Pretinho da Serrinha, Silvia Duffrayer (from Samba Que Elas Querem), and DJs Mary G, Gustavo Keno and DJ Nepal.

Samba da Volta for São Jorge
Samba da Volta comes early to pay homage to the saint of the month.
So, on April 22, starting at 8pm, the traditional roda de samba gathers its legion at Espaço Luiz Gama for a lively party! During the breaks, DJ Thyga won’t let anyone stand still either !

Boa Praça Feijoada
On April 23, the Boteco Boa Praça units are joining the St. George’s Day celebrations with a special program!
For the date, the house is betting on its traditional feijoada, served à la carte in a full buffet, with the signature of chef Pedro de Artagão. In addition, the celebration will feature a live samba circle.

São Jorge Festival at Yayá Comidaria
Yayá Comidaria Pop, run by chef Andressa Cabral, has prepared a special program for the São Jorge holiday.
On April 23rd, the chef is hosting Noca Neto, grandson of the late Noca da Portela, for a special samba circle at the restaurant. In addition, decoration inspired by the warrior saint, with elements reminiscent of devotion, feijoada and the house’s traditional batidinhas complete the event.

Teva’s Feijoada
Another São Jorge feijoada, but this one is special for vegans and vegetarians!
On April 23, Teva, chef Daniel Biron‘s 100% vegan restaurant, will have a complete feijoada on the menu, consisting of paris and shitake mushrooms, smoked carrots, smoked tofu, Plant Choice sausages and beans . And the traditional spices of a good feijoada, of course!
Live music will also be guaranteed with the samba circle of Raoni and Dandara, Martinho da Vila‘s first grandchildren.

Hail Saint George 23
As well as the feijoadas and the traditional São Jorge festivities, it’s worth checking out this exhibition that’s taking place at the Bhering Factory!
The event ‘Salve São Jorge 23’ proposes a collective occupation in celebration of the saint and runs throughout April. In this edition, more than 100 visual artists are participating with works presented in wooden boxes, used as individual exhibition supports.
The proposal invites each artist to create within this format, promoting a diverse and integrated occupation of the collective space.
