Starting this Saturday, the Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art will not only have its doors open, but visitors will also be able to go up to the roof. That’s because the space is hosting the installation “Roof — From Where You Can’t See It When You’re There,” by architect Pedro Varella, which invites the public to look at Guanabara Bay in a different way. Installation is part of MAC Niterói’s 30th-anniversary program
The reopening of the MAC Niterói roof has a very special reason. The building, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is celebrating its 30th anniversary and has prepared a program to commemorate the occasion in grand style.
Part of this celebration is the installation “Roof — From Where You Can’t See It When You’re There,” by architect Pedro Varella. In it, Pedro offers an unusual experience: viewing the landscape of Guanabara Bay from a vantage point normally inaccessible to the public.
To mark the occasion, a tubular staircase was installed along a section of the ramp leading to the exhibition floor. Upon reaching the roof deck, visitors get to experience the building from an unusual angle, with an incredible view of Guanabara Bay.
In addition to the installation, MAC’s anniversary program also includes four more commemorative exhibitions, if you’d like to experience the full lineup.
Visits to the MAC’s roof require a pass and are available for a limited time
The installation on the MAC’s roof will be open to the public starting this Saturday, but to participate in the experience, you’ll need to follow a few guidelines.
You must pick up a ticket at the museum’s reception desk; tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at four times: 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
Tours are conducted in groups of up to 15 people and last 15 minutes. It’s also worth noting that, depending on weather conditions, tours may be suspended.
The installation “Roof — What You Can’t See When You’re There” will remain on view through November 22.
