Have you ever heard of the Light Recicla project ? It’s a sustainable initiative by the electricity company that offers discounts on electricity bills to cariocas who donate recyclable material. Find out more about the project and how to get involved!
Over 6,000 tons recycled in the last year
The Light Recicla project has been running since August 2011 and its main objective is to reduce the environmental impact caused by the production and extraction of raw materials.
The initiative has even received awards, recognized as one of the main urban sustainability actions in the state of Rio. In 2024 alone, the program recycled more than 6,000 tons of waste!

How does the Light Recycles Project work?
Light’s sustainability project works as follows: all you have to do is go to any of Light’s recycling points with your electricity bill and register for the project.
From then on, the customer receives a card or can use the app to accumulate bonuses for each donation of recyclable material made. Each item is priced by weight, which will generate a credit on the energy bill chosen by the customer.
It’s worth noting that the recycling bins accept plastic, paper, metal, glass and vegetable oil and that the material must be delivered clean and separated.
You can also donate your bonus to the electricity bill of one of the social institutions registered with the Project.
