We’re telling you here that 2026 is the year of long weekends, especially in Rio de Janeiro. That’s because, in addition to national holidays, some days off only happen in April and only in the Marvelous City. Check out the April holidays in Rio so you can plan ahead!
Holy Week includes an optional day off and a holiday in Rio

Cariocas are already kicking off April with a long weekend! That’s because the first Friday of the month, April 3, is a national holiday commemorating the Passion of Christ, known as Good Friday.
However, in municipal and state government offices, Holy Thursday is an optional holiday, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette.
It’s also worth noting that Easter, celebrated on April 5 this year, is not a holiday, but many manage to take a longer break during this period.
Tiradentes and St. George’s Day holidays in the same week

Did you think the long weekend in April was only at the beginning of the month? Not at all— you still have a chance to string together more days off before the month ends!
That’s because April 21 is Tiradentes Day, which falls on a Tuesday. But April 23 is also a holiday in Rio de Janeiro, in honor of St. George’s Day. In other words, you can relax a bit longer and even enjoy a delicious feijoada on the warrior saint’s feast day!
