Ilha Fiscal is one of Rio de Janeiro’s main tourist attractions, but many people are still unaware of it or don’t even know what to do there .
So, if you’ve always wanted to know more about how to get to Ilha Fiscal and visit that “floating” mansion in the middle of Guanabara Bay, we’ll tell you all about it here!
“The Last Ball of the Empire”: Ilha Fiscal was once the setting for historic moments
Having been Brazil’s capital for many years, Rio de Janeiro is home to many places that have been part of the country’s history. Among them are the former Convento do Carmo, the Touring Building, and Ilha Fiscal.
The small island in Guanabara Bay has witnessed several historic events, one of the most famous being “The Last Ball of the Empire.” The party took place in November 1889, just a few days before the Proclamation of the Republic.
A fun fact: the Portuguese originally called it Ilha dos Ratos. And do you know why? Because of its shape, which resembled the animal’s anatomy, but also because of the alleged presence of rodents roaming the area!
The current name —much more pleasant—was given back in the 19th century, because the Fiscal Guard post was also located there, serving the port of the Empire’s capital.
Castle, exhibitions, and more: what to do on Ilha Fiscal?

Time has passed, but Ilha Fiscal remains a vibrant destination with plenty to do!
Starting with the “little castle, “ which you can spot even before you arrive. The neo-Gothic building was designed by engineer Adolpho José Del Vecchio, and its architectural beauty is truly impressive !
In addition, there are several other attractions on the island, such as the turret, the exhibition halls, the historic vessels, and much more! There’s even a submarine!
How do you get there, and how much does the tour cost?

There are two route options for those who want to visit the island and its facilities.
One way to get there is by schooner, and the trip takes, on average, 10 to 20 minutes, with up to 90 seats available per departure. However, this trip depends on weather conditions, and if the weather is bad, it’s a no-go!
The other option is by land, in a 75-seat minibus, which also departs at specific times and takes, on average, the same amount of time as the schooner.
Visits to Ilha Fiscal are not free, and tickets start at R$ 30 (half-price). You can purchase them in person or on the Navy’s website, where you’ll find all the details on prices, schedules, and information about free admission and discounts.
In addition, the ticket also grants access to the Navy Cultural Center at no additional cost.
