It’s impossible not to notice this emblematic building on Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro. That’s because the Oduvaldo Vianna Filho Municipal Cultural Center, better known as the Flamengo Castle, has an eclectic architecture that stands out among the more modern buildings. However, its fame is not only due to its appearance! We’ll tell you some interesting facts about this iconic building – which you can visit for free!
Castelinho do Flamengo is rumored to be haunted!

Castelinho do Flamengo is a symbol of eclectic architecture, as the building features different references, such as art nouveau, neo-baroque, rococo, French neo-gothic, among others.
In addition, the mansion has three floors, a terrace, and is decorated with stained glass, tiles, sculptures of angels and deities, terracotta ornaments, and a wooden staircase inside.
The project was designed by Italian architect Gino Copede, but Brazilian Francisco dos Santos was responsible for its execution between 1916 and 1918.
But why did the Flamengo Castle gain a reputation for being haunted? The building was initially designed to be the residence of Portuguese commander Joaquim da Silva Cardoso and his wife Carolina. However, the couple who lived there were Avelino Fernandes and Rosalina Feu Fernandes, along with their daughter Maria de Lourdes.
The couple died in 1932, and since then, many mysteries and legends have surrounded the Flamengo Castle. This is because it is said that Avelino and Rosalina were hit by a tram and that their daughter witnessed the tragedy.
After losing her parents, young Maria de Lourdes went to live under the guardianship of a family lawyer, who locked her in the highest tower of the mansion. Due to so much mistreatment, the girl took her own life, but legend has it that her spirit remained haunting the house in search of revenge.
The building has been turned into a cultural center and is open to visitors.
