It’s time to get your sneakers and your best sportswear ready, because one of the most anticipated events on the city’s calendar already has a date set. The 2026 Bridge Challenge, the iconic street race that crosses the Rio-Niterói Bridge, takes place in August and registration is now open! More details here!
A stunning route steeped in history: what is the Bridge Challenge?
This is already the second edition of the Bridge Challenge, after a hiatus of more than 10 years! And why has this race become so iconic and famous?
Because in this race, athletes cross part of it on top of the Rio-Niterói Bridge, with a privileged and different view of Rio de Janeiro. Among the postcard views, Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Christ the Redeemer make all the sweat along the way worthwhile.
It is worth remembering that the event began in 1981, when it brought together 3,000 people in its debut. Over the years, the editions took place sporadically, and in 2013, the race went on a 12-year hiatus.
The Challenge returned in 2025 and the last edition brought together 5,000 runners. According to the organization’s data, most were participating for the first time!
For this year’s edition, the race will start at Rua Professor Plínio Leite, in Niterói, in front of Caminho Niemeyer. The complete route is yet to be announced by the organizers, but we already know that 13 of the 21 km of the race will be crossing the Rio-Niterói Bridge. In addition, the finish line will be at Boulevard Olímpico, in Rio de Janeiro.
Confirmed date and requirements for the new edition
If you want to live this experience, mark your calendar! The race will take place on August 2, but registration is already open!
It is important to note that, in order to register for the Bridge Challenge, interested parties must meet some strict technical requirements. First, the organizing team requires proof of a recent minimum index.
Thus, athletes must present, at the time of registration, some official results from races held since January 1, 2025.
These competitions must be approved by the state federation, the Brazilian Athletics Confederation (CBAt), or World Athletics. The results of the 2025 edition of the Rio Marathon are also valid as criteria for participation.
In addition, half marathon times completed in up to 2:30 for men and 2:35 for women, or marathon times completed in up to 5:00 for men and 5:10 for women, will be accepted .
It is also worth noting that the Challenge is not just a competition. The event also includes exclusive areas for socializing, monitoring, activations, physical recovery stations , and a closing show, in a great collective celebration!
