The Suburban Audiovisual Festival (FAS) returns to Rio de Janeiro for its third edition and, this time, is taking place in the West Zone. From October 26 to November 15, the Bangu Shopping Theater will host a completely free program dedicated to filmmakers from the suburbs and outlying areas of Rio de Janeiro. Read more here!
The Competitive Short Film Showcase is one of the highlights of the program
One of the highlights of this edition is the Competitive Short Film Showcase, open exclusively to filmmakers from the suburbs and outlying areas of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Ten films of up to 20 minutes in length, completed in 2025 or 2026, will be selected. Each selected film will receive a cash prize of R$ 300. The winner chosen by the jury will receive R$ 2,000. Submissions are open until October 10 and are free of charge.
The program also includes a Short Film Production Workshop, led by Thayná Oliveira over six sessions. The workshop covers audiovisual language, screenwriting, filming, and editing, with the collective challenge of producing a short documentary rooted in the memories and culture of Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs.
The workshop is open to people aged 14 and older who reside in any neighborhood within the municipality , and registration remains open until October 15.
Another highlight is the Children’s Short Film Showcase, a non-competitive session featuring five selected Brazilian productions of up to 20 minutes, each with a cash prize of R$ 300.
The Suburban Audiovisual Festival features film screenings and discussion panels
The official opening will take place on November 11 at 7:00 p.m., featuring a screening of invited short films and a roundtable discussion on suburban and peripheral cinema.
In the days that follow, the schedule includes screenings from the competitive showcase, a children’s session , and the screening of a guest feature-length film. The closing ceremony, featuring the awards ceremony, is scheduled for November 15 at 6:00 p.m.
